Sales Door to Door
The economy not looking good these days people losing their jobs and their homes their life savings, their retirement, their business and etc. Some people will take most any kind of job as long as it is of ethical and moral standards just to hang on to their homes and business until the economy picks up. I don’t mean to sound so doom and gloom because we hear enough of that every day from Radio, Television, newspapers and magazines. There are a few bright spots left out there where a person can still make a few bucks and if you are willing to work you can make some big bucks, and that is door to door sales.
Sales are some of the highest paying jobs in America. There are numerous products out there sold every day by door to door salesmen. The one thing you hear the most about being sold door to door is the vacuum cleaner. There are many people whom have sold and made a very good living selling vacuum cleaners. Cooking utensils better known as pots and pans. You may have to cook a meal to demonstrate your wares but that is not all bad. Home Security and Fire Alarm Systems is another good product sold door to door. Satellite dish, Cable TV, Lawn Maintenance, Home repairs home entertainment systems etc. are just a few products sold door to door. Most of these jobs are commission jobs, meaning if you don’t make a sale you don’t get paid. You can usually set your own hours to work. Some companies will pay you a salary plus commission, but you will have to make sells with any of these jobs.
Let’s talk about selling Home Security and Fire Alarm Systems door to door. Crime rates are up due to the economy and the labor market being depressed and that makes a better market for the home Security System. Most Security companies will give you the basic system and install it and only charge for the monitoring and most of these sales (around 70 to 75%) are made door to door.
That’s where you come into play. If you are planning to try the door knocking commission job do a little research first. Before you start out you need to look at yourself in the mirror, are you clean shaven, is your beard trimmed, are you casually dressed with clean clothes (no baggy pants) shoes look ok, wear shirts with company logo if you have one. Do you have ID card with company name and picture, put it on a lanyard and wear it to the door, when the home owner opens the door they can see your ID and want think you are going to do a home invasion. Now you are ready to hit the road and knock a few doors are ring the door bell.
Your Market Homes of less than $100,000.00 to $110,000.00 is not your market $125,000.00 UP is your market. Most of them have good jobs, pay their bills, and have a good credit score. They care about their family the investment they have in their home and want to protect it from burglaries, fire and home invasion. You should do a little preliminary work casing out the neighborhood before you start ringing door bells. Be sure the homes in the neighborhood are the ones we mention above. When you pick a house to ring the door bell first check it out. Is the yards maintained, is the hedges trimmed, has the grass been cut lately, does the flowers look ok, does the house look ok, it don’t need painting, are the shutters falling off? If the cars are parked on the lawn and not on the driveway, under the carport or in the garage that is not a good sign, the people don’t care about the house and probably rent.
The Approach When you pull in the driveway and get out of your car (this is the hardest part of selling door to door, getting out of the car) you go to the door and ring the door bell. When the home owner comes to the door back off a little and give them room, don’t crowd them, that way they won’t think you are trying to get in the house and/ are cause them harm. Hold your ID badge up so they can see it and at the same time introduce yourself and the company you are with and the product you are selling. First ask if they are the home owner. (There are some things you can’t sell to renters) If they are then you tell them you don’t mean to bother them and you will only keep them a few seconds,(this puts them in a relaxed state of mind). Give them a chance to respond. Comment about the weather, how nice their yard looks, you like their car, but make some nice comment or brag on the house, the yard are maybe the boat out back. This will start a conversation and break the ice. You are making a first impression and building confidence in a few minutes, so you need to give it your best shot. Then you can tell them why you stopped and what you have to offer.
The Sale Your main objective is to build that confidence enough for the home owner to invite you in their home or either ask if you could come in and explain what you are selling and demonstrate or show them the product you are selling. This is the biggest obstacle to overcome, but once you do, that is about 80% of the sale. Then it’s up to you and your presentation and knowing how to close the sale. In your conversation with the home owner, try to find a need for your product and fill that need. You should be familiar with the product you are selling so you can go through the presentation very smoothly. Answer all the questions ask and if you are not able or not sure about the answer, use that cell phone and get an answer. Once the presentation is made, shut up and give the home owner a chance to talk. This is where the sale is made.
In most cases it is very important for the husband and wife to be at the presentation.
Most of the time when you do a presentation for the husband or wife alone you will not close the sale. They will tell you they have to check with the other person not at the presentation and they will get back with you. You know 95% of the time they will not call you back and if they do it will be to say they don’t want it. If you call them, same story. The sale must be made while you are in the house If you don’t make the sale at the presentation 95% 0f the time you want make the sale.
If you use a presentation pad or a notebook, go through flipping the pages and explaining each page as you go and don’t make it too boring, inject a little humor to keep up the interest and show you are human also. Should the customer be interested in the item you are selling most of the time you can detect that interest at the door. You should be pleasant and respectful, use your manners and they will do the same. Door to door is not as bad as some people make it out to be. It’s just like most jobs it’s as good or as bad as you make it. I have been going door to door for many years and met many very good people and made new friends and I can tell you it pays very good depending how much you want to make, how hard you work or how smart you work. You can work your own schedule with most commission jobs. Most people like that part. The pay is much better than unemployment.
A good sales person can always get a job. Couple of industries is Home Security and CCTV, Closed Circuit Television and Dish Network. These industries are always looking for good people and they will train you if you are new to the job. Cable TV companies are usually looking for sales people and installers.
